The River Discovery Center is a learning center focusing on the river. It is located in Paducah, KY, 30 minutes from the confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio rivers. Housed in Paducah's oldest building (built in 1843), the center features interactive exhibits, music stations, a navigation simulator and a 15-minute film entitled Rivers: The Heart of Our Nation.
Originally a branch of the Bank of Louisville and home to the banker, the second-floor is furnished in period antiques. Guests can enjoy water exhibits featuring a lock and dam, a hydro-electric dam and rain table, audio narratives of important river figures and roustabout songs from the Great Steamboat Era.
Models of flatboats, steamboats and towboats are located throughout the exhibits area. There is also an exhibit paying homage to the role of the rivers in our area during the Civil War. The film is shown in the historic section of the facility known as the Maiden Alley Cinema. Special education programs may be arranged in advance of group visits.
