Melvin Price Locks and Dam

The Melvin Price Locks and Dam is the newest lock on the Mighty Mississippi River and was built as a replacement for the old Locks and Dam 26 in Alton, IL. Located below the confluence of the Illinois River and above the Missouri River, the Melvin Price Locks and Dam is a critical structure in our inland waterway system. Each year more than 75 million tons of goods move through these locks. Melvin Price has two lock chambers - a 600-foot lock used for recreational and smaller craft and a 1200-foot lock used for large commercial tows.Take a tour of the locks and dam and discover how they help maintain the Mississippi River's thriving navigation system. Tours are free, and occur daily at 10a.m., 1p.m., and 3p.m.
