Makanda Inn & Cottages

Makanda Inn is a unique bed and breakfast that was built to fit into the natural landscape.  It is a quiet and peaceful adult get away that is well balanced choice for those who prefer a more casual vibe, but don't want to sacrifice quality for it.

The inn is the only lodging facility of its kind in Southern Illinois. Straw bale construction, reclaimed materials and thoughtful landscaping make this inn your number one choice for eco friendly lodging in southern Illinois. With both suites in the main lodge of the inn, as well as cottages, guests have a few relaxing and peaceful lodging options to choose from. The suites come with an impressive hot breakfast that will make you never want to leave. And the cottages with their quaint layout, large soaking tubs, fairy tale living roofs and well thought out views will make you sorry you booked that other place last time. The awe inspiring beauty of this property can hardly be captured in a photo. You really need to book a stay to fully grasp this inn's awesomeness.

Makanda Inn is a unique bed and breakfast that is situated directly adjacent to Southern Illinois' Giant City State Park. The inn also sits right at the edge of the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail. Resting on 18 gorgeous wooded acres with a creek that winds through the property, Makanda Inn is abundant with wildlife and a diverse population of native plants and trees. The stunning woodwork and masonry work throughout the property add just enough of a rustic feel to round out its top notch elegance.

The inn was built in 2009 with the addition of its cottages in 2012.

Bed and Breakfast Style

Makanda Inn is rustic in feel, yet modern in style. Though the construction gives you that woodsy, rustic vibe, the gourmet breakfasts, heavenly luxury bedding, fluffy towels and decorative touches add just the right amount of modern. It is a perfect balance of natural elegance.

Makanda Inn's main lodge features a large common area that offers a perfect venue for group gatherings, small events, weddings, family reunions or just some much need relaxation for couples.

Each room on the property has a king size bed, fitted with the highest quality Egyptian Cotton bedding.  Walk in showers inside the suites feature river stone floors that offer a therapeutic acupressure element to your shower, and the large soaking tubs and wet room showers in the cottages face the woods to make full use of the fantastic views of the property.

The inn is just under a half mile from the historic Makanda Boardwalk, which is home to some quaint shops that are worth checking out.

Locally or Family-Owned Business Notes

Owner/Developer Greg Wellman first visited the Southern Illinois woods in 1976 as part of an Outward Bound trip. He attended Southern Illinois University and spent weekends hiking and rock climbing in Giant City and surrounding woods. He graduated in 1983 with a degree in aviation management and flight. He has worked in the aviation field ever since, taking a break for a couple of years to attend the University Of Chicago Graduate School Of Business.

Greg serves on the advisory board for the SIU aviation program. Over the years, he has developed interest and skills in natural building. The idea for Camp Zest emerged from attending natural building workshops where he met others who had an interest in natural building. He discovered that there were a lot of people who wanted to build something but did not have the full complement of skills, time and money to do it on their own. His hope is that Camp Zest will provide the catalyst to bring people together with the right resources to create an owner/builder network of these natural retreats.
