Jones Bar-B-Q Diner in Marianna has been a part of the food culture in the Arkansas Delta for more than a century. The Southern Foodways Alliance, an organization “dedicated to the documentation and celebration of the diverse food cultures of the American South,” believes Jones’s to be the oldest African-American owned restaurant in the South and possibly the nation. The diner was bestowed with the America’s Classic designation from the James Beard Foundation, the only restaurant in Arkansas to receive the recognition and the only restaurant in the state to ever be awarded a Beard medal for any category. The menu is simple...barbecue sandwich (served only on Wonder bread) with slaw, barbecue sandwich without slaw and barbecue by the pound. You can purchase chips and canned soft drinks as well. Get there early...when Mr. Jones runs out of meat, he closes for the day.
