Civil War Monument

This monument was erected on the grounds of the Marion County Court House to commemorate the execution of 10 Confederate Sympathizers.   After a Union "Snitch," Andrew Alsman, was kidnapped and not returned as demanded by the Federal authorities, 10 men who had been imprisoned for refusing to sign the Oath of Loyalty to the Union, were taken from the jail and executed as an example to the community.  This Civil War tragedy came to be known as the "Palmyra Massacre."  More information about this infamous event is available at the Gardner House Museum and/or the Old Marion County Jail in Palmyra.
