Above the Falls Sports

Above The Falls Sports strives to promote recreational activity in the unique urban environment of the Mississippi River Valley. We do this by offering the ultimate Minnesotan urban paddling tours. We love paddling on the Mississippi River and are enthusiastic about sharing our passion for paddle sports and the river with our guests and with the local community.

When our owner and Chief Boat Handler, Bob, moved to downtown from south Minneapolis he immediately took advantage of his proximity to the Mississippi River. An avid paddler and rower, Bob explored the river within the Twin Cities and beyond. He soon realized that this river is sorely underused for man-powered recreation, and he sought to build a business that promotes paddling fun and fitness on the Mississippi.

Our boathouse was set up in downtown Minneapolis in August of 2009. Our first full season of paddling was the summer of 2010. Each year Above the Falls Sports has enjoyed sharing the wonder of paddling with more and more people. We now employ fifteen guides and operate multiple tours a day seven days a week.

Our tours highlight the historical development of Minneapolis by paddling under old railway bridges and past old industrial warehouses, and engaging with Minneapolis’s industrial heritage.

We also work hard to show off the unique environmental and geographical features of the city and river by exploring the Mississippi River gorge below St. Anthony Falls and by highlighting the wildlife of the river by paddling past rookery nesting areas. We hope to bring new awareness of the Mississippi river as a unique recreational waterway and the need to continue our efforts to clean up and protect the area via the fun and exciting sport of kayaking!

Above the Falls Sports has experienced guides on every trip who truly enjoy sharing the important and continuously relevant knowledge of the Mississippi River. We tell guests to come prepared to explore the Mississippi River Valley like you’ve never anticipated. From out-of-town guests to native residents, beginners to experienced paddlers, we love to share lasting memories that won’t soon be forgotten. Kayaking the stretch of the Mississippi passing through Minneapolis and St Paul is a unique opportunity to paddle past both parkland and industry. When people ask you where the most beautiful view is in the Twin Cities, we’re confident you’ll say “from the water."
