The Rand House

The Rand House is located in Monticello, Minnesota's historic district on a prominent hill overlooking the city. It is a former country estate and summer retreat of the Rand family, and it is one of the last remaining country homes built prior to the turn-of-the century in Wright County by leading Minneapolis families. As the railroad made the countryside more accessible, many successful industrialists and financiers of the 1880s sought an escape from city life in the quiet beauty of Monticello on the Mississippi River.

The property has been renovated to preserve its unique historical characteristics, including a winter parlor with large stone fireplace, an elegant drawing room with a grand piano, gorgeous antiques throughout, an enormous screened porch overlooking landscaped lawns and woods with regional bird-watching opportunities, and much more. It is a short drive from many quality antique shops and is near additional historic sites from Monticello's founding, including the "little mountain" that gave the city its name.

The Rand House has been regularly recognized for its historical appeal. It is the winner of several awards, including the Preservation Alliance of Minnesota's prestigious award for "Outstanding Historic Preservation."

Bed and Breakfast Style

A trip to the Rand House allows visitors to travel back into beautiful, historical Monticello, Minnesota. This gorgeous property was once a private home but is now a bed and breakfast listed on the National Register of Historical Places. It was built in 1884 in the Queen Anne style by Rufus Rand, Sr. as a wedding gift for his wife. It existed as a country home for much of its history, although interestingly it was loaned to the Army Air Corps to be used as officers' quarters for pilots receiving glider training in Monticello during World War II.

Following the war, the home passed through several owners before being turned into a bed and breakfast that preserves the historical characteristics of the property. The interior features fully furnished period rooms, a formal dining room, a drawing room, a parlor, and a solarium while the exterior contains nearly three acres of lawns and traditional Victorian flower gardens with fountains, walking paths, and a pond.
