Chester, Illinois Welcome Center

The Chester Welcome Center is located in Segar Park next to the Chester Bridge overlooking the Mississippi River.  The center offers an extensive display of information about Chester, the surrounding area and the Mississippi River, has restroom facilities,  and a large deck overlooking the Mississippi River, Chester Bridge,  and Missouri Bottoms.  The bronze statue of Popeye the Sailor Man has been overlooking the Mississippi River in Segar Park for more than 30 years. This is the first of numerous Popeye & Friends Character Trail statues of Popeye characters placed in various areas in Chester.

Near this area, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark stopped to engage a number 15 men as they planned for their voyage of discovery of the Louisiana Territory.  TAt least 5 of these men were permanent members of the voyage and made the entire trip to the Pacific Ocean and back.  The encampment was located on the island November 27 through December 5, 1803.
